Born in 1976 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ahmed began his academic career at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied mathematics and physics under the guidance of Professor James Hocking. In 2004, Ahmed earned his Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from the University of Texas.

In 2005, Ahmed published "On the Complexity of Computing" in the Journal of Computer and System Sciences, which laid the foundation for his groundbreaking work on computational complexity theory.
